Outdoor wrestling has always fascinated me. From Wrestlemanias in outside super-stadiums to AEW in Daily’s Place, something about wrestling in the great outdoors has always seemed like a phenomenon. Perhaps it’s my bad relationship with being outside (cue severe bug bite allergies) that makes outdoor wrestling seem so exotic, maybe I just haven’t watched enough. Either way, while cars lined up my street for my neighbors’ hot-dog-BBQ-eating-pool-dipping-cornhole-playing 4th of July cookouts, I couldn’t help but think of GCW’s Backyard Wrestling 4. Backyard wrestling should be a summer party staple.
BYW4 was one of the most fun shows I’ve watched this year. Backyard Wrestling 4 concluded another big weekend for GCW, and like every GCW show, it wasn’t about selling out arenas or making money. In fact, this show was (understandably) invite only. It literally took place in someone’s backyard!!! BYW 4 was exactly what professional wrestling should be: fun. If you can’t enjoy people wrestling in someone’s yard complete with a trampoline, you’re boring and we can’t be friends.
There’s an extra level of creativity- I think- that has to be reached when it comes to backyard wrestling, and today, GCW and its wrestlers hit it. When you think about it, there’s really no limit as to what can be done on a backyard wrestling show. Anything can happen, anything can be used! From children’s play cars to sparklers, sheds, and everything in between, BYW 4 had it all. I loved that the show was so laid back and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. It was so goofy and so much fun. Often times the world of professional wrestling can be tainted with negativity and people taking things too seriously, a show like this helps to break all of that up. In addition, BYW 4 added a little bit of light on a 4th of July holiday not many people really felt like celebrating.
This is where I tell you to go out of your way to watch this show and blah-blah-blah, but I’m serious. There wasn’t a single thing not to love about this event. It was fun and silly, something we all could use a little more of these days.
