Welcome everyone to the first of many-not that many- television reviews!

*Crowd cheers*

Thursday night marked the mid-season premieres of beloved, Grey’s Anatomy, and it’s sister show, Station 19. After cliff-hanging (literally) finales last November fans were left clambering for the February returns. Here’s the breakdown:

Station 19 Season 18: Episode 9

Started from the Bottom

And the winner for plot twist of the year goes to…

While the episode was meant to focus on Owen Hunt and the “will he live” “will he die” suspense in wake his car accident, the biggest takeaways from this episode were in fact Carina Deluca and Vic Hughes. The bubbly Italian, Deluca, graced viewers screens for a portion of the episode. For a lot of fans, this was the highlight of the premiere. Oddly enough, and disappointing to many, there was no scene in which Carina and her wife, firefighter Maya Bishop, interacted. This was almost for the better though, as we got to see more of Carina. She brought her OB/GYN speciality to 19 and helped a young girl getting her period for the first time, and raged with Ben Warren and Jack Gibson after they receive low funding for their proposed health clinic. Bishop on the other hand, was busy trying to impress new fire chief, Natasha Ross. The verdict is still out on Ross, but her quickness to promote former chief, Robert Sullivan, has drama and angst looming in the distance. On an interesting note, Ross was the first person to suggest Travis Montgomery-someone who sometimes goes unnoticed- for promotion. While he ultimately advocates against the lieutenant title, it was nice to see someone recognize the work he puts in. It wouldn’t be Station 19 without Ben Warren taking risks and doing things he shouldn’t in the name of saving a life. The life in this case being Owen Hunt. Warren didn’t get in too much trouble this time, but it was reiterated over and over that he needs to be more careful. Ultimately, with the collaboration of Station 19 and Station 23, Hunt is rescued from the ravine and is transported to Grey-Sloan Memorial. The most shocking moment of the episode- maybe the season- came within the last two minutes of the episode. Carina took Vic Hughes to Grey-Sloan to get her heart checked out in precautionary measures. It would be found however, that Vic is pregnant. That’s right. Vic Hughes is pregnant. There’s not a single viewer on the planet that saw this one coming. Vic herself didn’t even see this coming. The Earth-shattering revelation is bound to be the focal point of the upcoming episodes. Vic’s relationship with her boyfriend, fellow firefighter Theo Ruiz, has been up in the air as Hughes battles her grief after loss of best friend, Dean Miller. The baby is presumably Ruiz’s, but with their strained relationship what will his reaction be? Will Vic even tell him? In a premier designed to focus on Owen Hunt, he’s sure not the main conversation to come out of the episode.

Grey’s Anatomy- Season 18 Episode 6

No Time to Die

There were many focal points heading into this premier, and Grey’s Anatomy upheld the tradition for its new episodes and had fans shaking their heads and cursing at the sky. The biggest stories heading into this episode were of course, Owen Hunt and the accident, but almost even more so- Kai Bartley and Amelia Shepherd. Owen Hunt ends up being fine-minus a surgery and some intensive recovery in his near future- in one of the most underwhelming accidents in Grey’s history. Since his season 5 debut, Hunt has managed to avoid major physical trauma, and ended up walking away from this major accident basically unscathed, in an anti-climatic finish of November’s finale. The bigger story here is Dr. Cormac Hayes’ sudden exit from Grey-Sloan. His resignation comes after the accident, and the information that Hunt promised to give drugs to sick Veterans to help them die. This of course, is illegal and sent Hayes running for the hills. Hayes, played by Richard Flood, was first presented on screen in season sixteen after Alex Karev’s exit. The most talked about happening from premiere night was Kai Bartley and Amelia Shepherd- side mention of Link. To fans, Atticus Lincoln went from prefect man to public enemy number one. After witnessing his former love Amelia kiss Bartley in the winter finale, Link spends the episode pissed of at Shepherd and the world. In true Amelia fashion, neurosurgeon extraordinaire calls Link out on his bullshit, and says she thought about her decision kiss Kai very carefully. Bartley is the shows first non-binary character and has quickly stolen the hearts of fans. In one of the closing scenes, Kai and Amelia sit in Joe’s Bar, and the chemistry is far from obsolete. In the midst of the Link-Amelia, Owen-Hayes drama, Farouk finally gets his heart and beloved resident Levi Schmitt has a post-surgery breakdown that destroyed fans’ hearts more than Owen’s injuries ever could. Let’s not even discuss Jo Wilson and Link (spoiler alert they had sex). In the end, Grey’s Anatomy gave a confound mid-season premiere, and left us all scratching our heads.

Overall the episodes delivered in certain aspects, all though despite the advertising, there wasn’t much that made it a cross-over special. Both shows return this Thursday starting at 8pm EST with the fallout of the premiers.
