From a School Journal to a Song Release, Samantha Jessalyn Tells all About Their Journey

Updated: Jun 2, 2021

Oh man oh man it’s been a long time. It’s so sad to think that I go weeks without posting something on here, but I’ve been struggling a lot lately. Anyways here we are with a new interview! This one was super special and inspired me a whole ton. My good friend Samantha just released her first song! And I got the exclusive privilege of talking to her all about her journey and the success she’s seen so far. All the links to her song and socials are at the end of the interview so make sure to check that out!

Hello and welcome! Sam, you’ve just launched your music career and are celebrating the release of your new song, superglue. When did you first get into making music and when did you start writing songs?

Well, I’ve always had a passion for music. My parents have told me that even at one years old I’ve been stringing random words together to make a song. I believe I started taking songwriting seriously in the second grade. For our writing class, we had these journals with different topics to choose from. One of them was a songwriting journal. I remember being immediately drawn it and would write in it any chance that I got! I got my own songbook the day after first writing and have been obsessed with doing it ever since.

Did you have a moment where you knew that this was something you wanted to peruse as a dream and career or was it just something that naturally happened?

I feel like it’s a mix of both. I mean, I really immersed myself intro writing and creating and it was almost like an instinct. My first songbook, which I still have, has a list of goals. I think that when I first started songwriting, I was so little so I didn’t know that this was something I could take with me into the future. The main goal in second grade was to become a wrestler because wrestling is something that I love and hold close to my heart. I think that when I started attending guitar lessons that my music teacher held after and before school in the third grade, I really knew that I wanted to pursue this dream that had developed over the course of that time jump from second to third grade.

For those that don’t know, you released your first song entitled Superglue, last week. What was the process like of releasing it? How long ago did you write it?

So I wrote Superglue in December of 2020. It took me 15 minutes to write in full which is generally something that never happens when I’m writing. It just really flowed and clicked. Superglue was originally a song on the ukulele. I didn’t have intentions of releasing it at first since it was just meant as a one month gift. But then, I posted it on insta and people were really enjoying it and I thought to myself “what if I like released this? What if I turned it into something more?”. And thats what I did in February of this year. I was sitting down just messing with the chords when I grabbed my guitar to see what the song would sound like on there. I grabbed my capo and this new version of Superglue just came to be. I recorded it on my iPhone on the app garage band. It took roughly an hour and I felt so proud of it, especially since I included a harmony which I didn’t think I could do on my own. It was a struggle at first in the recording process and to get it to release. You have to change the audio file to be a certain format and that was probably the most difficult part. That must’ve taken an hour to get it to the way that Amuse, my publisher, needed as a format. Speaking of Amuse, that’s a big part of this releasing process. I didn’t know much about the program. I just searched something like ‘free music distributors’ and that was the first on the list. I just put all of my trust into it and never looked back. Definitely a speedy choice but I’m really glad I didn’t hesitate! The past few weeks were just nerves and excitement leading up to the actual release day. I wasn’t sure how things were going to go which was so nerve-racking, but luckily I had amazing support behind me reassuring that it’d all be okay which it did turn out to be okay, it was more than okay. Truly an incredible experience.

Did you expect to get such a positive response to the song?

At first? God no. I was so nervous. On release night before I went on insta live, I was literally just pacing around my room just thinking and thinking about what was going to happen at midnight. I thought maybe 5 people would listen and that would be it but the world is so crazy man.. So crazy. There’s literally like 200+ people listening and following this journey I’ve started and I cant even begin to believe that this is actually happening. Its’s so wild and I’m so grateful that people are loving the song and wanting to tune in for more of what I have to say and put out into the world.

Are there any plans for new releases?

So many plans... So many. I have around 12 songs that are in the drafts currently and there’s one in particular that I can really see myself releasing sometime in the next 2 months. I think that people should definitely be on the lookout for new music coming out soon.

One final question here, you are such a perfect example of someone following their dreams and doing what they love, to wrap up, what advice do you have for anyone out there looking to peruse their own dreams?

I think that it’s important for people to understand that you can really do anything that you put your mind to. Nobody or nothing should stop you from pursuing what you love to do in life. It might be difficult for things to become a reality at the start, but difficultly is just apart of the journey and there will always be a part of the ride that’s difficult. That’s the fun part I think, to have an obstacle. If you’re not experiencing an obstacle of sorts, it might get boring and you might not have anything to overcome. When you overcome an obstacle it’s something to feel proud of, you know? Whether it’s big or small. just never give up, ever. You’ve got one life and what you should be doing in that life is experiencing what YOU want to experience and what YOU want to do with it, not what anyone else wants for you. Just stick with what you’re doing and stay positive, if it’s meant to be it’ll all work out in the end!

I cannot express my gratitude towards Sam for sharing their story with me! She’s someone we can all strive to be, and he’s a true inspirational everyone. Here is the link that will take you to all of her social medias, her YouTube page, and all the places you can stream Superglue.
