Hello everyone! The last time I interviewed Sam, they had just put out his debut song, Superglue. In this interview, he tells all about her new album as well as some of the challenges they face as a young musician. You can check out all their work here.
Reading of the Records: Welcome back Sam! The last time we talked you had just put out your debut single, Superglue, and now we’re two months removed from the release of your debut album. How are you feeling?
Sam: I'm absolutely ecstatic but also incredibly nervous. The progress I've made since last year's release is so incredible to me, and I have been enjoying every moment since then as much as I can. Maintaining the success and trying to get people to stay engaged has been what's got me nervous, but looking ahead to all of my future plans, I could not be more excited to share with the world what's to come!
RR: I have plenty to ask about what’s next for you but first take us back to the process of putting the album together, I’m sure it was an incredible amount of work, but you’re 15 years old with so much going on. What was that like?
Sam: That's a great question! The process was so stressful. I set back the release multiple times just because of how draining working on this album would get. I pieced together the entire thing in my bedroom on my IPhone. I would get so frustrated so easily and doubt myself and ability a lot of the time. Whenever I got into those ruts, I would just rewatch Taylor Swift's Miss Americana documentary on Netflix to remind myself of the love I have for this music career that I've started, and that it's not all going to be so glamorous right from the start. Being so real with the lyrics I write can be so incredibly draining, but it's what I love to do most. I want to make sure people are finding themselves in what I do while also creating an outlet for myself to cope with situations I'm put in. The night I finished the record was the most accomplished I've felt in my entire life. I can remember it so well. I just listened to the album on loop and smiled the entire time.
RR: You mentioned writing as ways to cope with situations… this was a breakup album correct?
Sam: Yes, this is an album mostly focused on breakups! They say to write what you know, and breakups have become a large part of my teenage experience.
RR: Is there a specific song on the album that was particularly difficult to write or put out there?
Sam: All of them were so incredibly difficult in their own ways. There were so many times I cried during writing sessions and had to walk away and take a breather. Tracks like Cliche, Embloom., and Untitled were written right in the heat of the moment of intense feeling, and would be considered to be some of the hardest to put out there because of the raw feeling that was portrayed.
RR: I know your crowd of fans absolutely loved Embloom, is there any reward for you knowing you put it all out there and people listened and resonated with it?
Sam: There's absolutely an incredible sense of reward. When I finished Embloom., I thought it was going to be a track that was underrated. It's one of my favorite things I've ever written, and knowing that it hasn't gotten overlooked and that so many people love and connect with it means everything to me. I can't wait to perform it live.
RR: As you mentioned earlier there’s so much stress after releasing something to continue on that path, but, without giving everything away, what kinds of plans do you have next?
Sam: Without giving away too much, I have 2 projects in the making, as well as merch! I've also been looking more into doing live shows and how to go about doing that as an independent artist.
RR: Live shows!! That’s so incredibly exciting, I’m sure you’ll be selling out in no time.
Sam: Hopefully! I'd love to connect with the fans in such a direct way like that.
RR: I don’t want to keep you any longer so in the spirit of Women’s History Month, who are some of the women who inspire you the most? I know you mentioned Taylor earlier and I think we can all relate to that.
Sam: I love that question! I am constantly inspired by the amazing women present in my life. Aside from celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and former WWE wrestler Aj Lee, there's plenty of women in my daily life who inspire me. To name a few I'd have to say my mom, my best friends Alaina, Olivia, Alivia, Emma, and April, as well as yourself and my amazing girlfriend. I am always looking at that group of people in admiration of how much they've overcome and how strong they all are. I aspire to have the same strength and beauty as them always.
